What mystery shopping should cost in 2026

Agencies quote per programme, which makes comparison impossible. Here is how per-visit pricing breaks down, and what you should expect to pay in Southeast Asia.

The reason mystery shopping prices are hard to compare is that agencies quote a programme, not a visit. A twelve-month contract with setup fees and a bespoke form build is genuinely difficult to put next to anything else.

What a visit is actually made of

  • The shopper's fee — what the person doing the work is paid
  • The platform or agency margin
  • Reimbursement — what the shopper has to spend on your premises, billed at cost
  • Review — a human reading the report before you see it

Reimbursement is the part that confuses people. If a shopper has to buy dinner for two to evaluate dinner service, somebody funds that dinner. It is a real cost and it should be billed at cost against a cap you set, not bundled into a price that makes the visit look expensive.

What to expect

A short visit or a phone enquiry sits at the bottom. A full dine-in evaluation with photos, a receipt and a written narrative is the standard unit. Overnight stays and multi-stage scenarios cost more because they take a specialist and a whole evening.

Be suspicious of anything that looks far too cheap. If the shopper's fee is not enough to make the trip worth their time, the person taking the job is not the person you want evaluating your business.
